Free online image converters
A photo is only useful if the next program can open it. iPhones save HEIC, websites serve WebP and AVIF, and cameras produce RAW files that most apps ignore. These converters turn them into the formats people actually need, inside your browser, so your pictures stay on your device.
Which tool do you need?
Start with the format you have and think about where the picture goes next. JPG is the safe choice for sharing and upload forms, PNG keeps transparency and suits editing, and WebP helps web pages load faster.
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Open an iPhone photo on Windows or send it through a form | HEIC to JPG |
| Keep the transparent background of a web image | WebP to PNG |
| Use an AVIF picture in older software | AVIF to JPG |
| Make images lighter for your website | PNG to WebP |
| Turn a TIFF scan into something you can email | TIFF to JPG |
| Get a normal photo from a Canon RAW file | CR2 to JPG |
Questions
Does converting improve image quality?
No. A conversion can only keep the detail that is already in the file. Saving a small JPG as PNG makes the file bigger, but the picture looks the same.
Which format gives the smallest file?
For photos, AVIF and WebP are usually smaller than JPG, while PNG is usually the largest. The smallest format is only useful if the place you are sending it to accepts it.
