How to use it

  1. Add your .webp images.
  2. They convert as soon as you add them.
  3. Download one by one or as a ZIP.

Good to know

Converting to PNG cannot bring back detail already lost in a lossy WebP, but it will not lose any more.

When PNG is the right target

WebP can hold transparency, and PNG is the format that most design software, slide tools and cutting machines reliably accept with transparency intact. JPG cannot help here, since it fills every see-through area with a solid colour.

What to expect from the result

  • There is no quality setting, because PNG is lossless. Your file converts as soon as you add it.
  • If the WebP was saved in lossy mode, any compression artefacts already in it will be kept exactly. PNG stops further damage but does not repair old damage.
  • Size usually goes up. Flat graphics stay reasonably small, while photographs can become very large.
  • Animated WebP files give you a single still image.

A quick check for transparency

Viewers usually draw transparent areas in white or black, so a file can look as though it has a solid background when it does not. To be sure, place the PNG over a coloured shape in a slide or design tool. If the colour shows through around the logo, the transparency survived.

Questions

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. PNG supports full transparency, so it carries over exactly.

Why did the file get bigger?

PNG uses lossless compression, which cannot shrink photos nearly as much as WebP can.
