PNG to WebP
If you run a website, swapping heavy PNGs for WebP is one of the easiest ways to make pages load faster.
Loading tool…
How to use it
- Drop in your PNG files.
- Pick a quality. 80 to 90% suits most graphics.
- Download the WebP files and upload them to your site.
Good to know
Screenshots and flat graphics with sharp edges can show soft halos at low settings, so keep the quality higher for those.
Safari cannot create WebP files in the browser. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for this tool.
Which quality suits which image
| Image type | Start at | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Photos saved as PNG | 80% | Very little, savings are large |
| Logos and flat graphics | 90% | Soft halos around edges |
| Screenshots with text | 90 to 95% | Blurry small letters |
When to keep the PNG
- Pixel art and tiny icons, where each pixel matters.
- Master files you may edit later. Keep the PNG and publish the WebP.
- Graphics that compress well already. Compare sizes, as a small flat PNG may not shrink much.
After converting
Transparency is preserved. WebP is supported by all current major browsers, so you can usually replace the PNG on your site directly. Update the links or file names to match. Saving WebP needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox, because Safari cannot create these files in the browser.
