Application portals love strict limits like “photo under 50 KB”. Set the limit, and the tool finds the best quality that fits under it.

How to use it

  1. Pick a preset or type the maximum size in KB.
  2. Add your photos.
  3. Check the new size in the list and download.

Good to know

The tool first lowers JPG quality as far as it sensibly can. Only if the file still does not fit does it reduce the pixel dimensions as well.

For limits of 20 KB or less, crop the photo closely first. Fewer pixels to store means a cleaner result.

How the target size is reached

The tool searches for the highest quality setting, between 30% and 95%, that fits under your limit. If even 30% is too big, it shrinks the picture by a fifth and searches again, repeating until the file fits. So you keep every pixel when that is possible, and lose dimensions only when you have to.

A file that is already under your limit and already in the chosen format is handed back untouched, so it will not be needlessly recompressed.

What size can realistically hold what?

These are rough guides for a typical photo saved as a JPG at decent quality. Pictures with lots of fine detail, such as foliage or gravel, need more room than a face against a plain wall.

LimitComfortable picture size
20 KBabout 400 × 500 px
50 KBabout 640 × 800 px
100 KBabout 1000 × 750 px

Getting a cleaner result at very small sizes

  • Crop first. Removing empty background leaves more bytes for the part that matters.
  • Resize to the size the form will display. A 4000-pixel photo squeezed into 20 KB looks worse than a well-prepared 400-pixel one.
  • Plain, evenly lit backgrounds compress far better than busy ones, so reshoot if you can.
  • Try WebP where the destination accepts it, since it often looks better at the same size. Many government and exam portals accept only JPG, so read the form first.

Questions

Will the file be exactly the size I enter?

It will be at or just below it, which is what upload forms check.

Can I keep a PNG as a PNG?

PNG cannot be tuned to a target size in the same way, so the output is JPG or WebP. Transparent areas become white in JPG.

What size should a signature scan be?

Forms often ask for 10 to 20 KB. Crop tightly around the signature and choose 20 KB.
