WebP to JPG

Many sites now serve images as WebP, so the picture you saved may not open in your older editor or upload form. JPG solves that.

How to use it

  1. Drop in your .webp files.
  2. Set the quality. 90% is a good default.
  3. Download the JPGs.

Good to know

JPG has no transparency. Any see-through area in the WebP is filled with white. If you need to keep transparency, use WebP to PNG.

Animated WebP files are converted using their first frame only.

Why you ended up with a .webp file

Websites often send WebP to browsers that support it, even when the original was a JPG. Your browser saves what it received, so right-clicking a picture can give you a .webp file when you expected something else. The same image may appear as JPG in one browser and WebP in another.

WebP is a Google format from 2010 and it is well supported by browsers, but software outside the browser caught up slowly. Photoshop, for example, only gained built-in WebP support in version 23.2, released in 2022, and older copies still will not open these files.

What changes in the conversion

  • Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency.
  • Animated WebP files give you the first frame only.
  • The quality slider runs from 40 to 100%. Start at 90% and only go lower if the file needs to be smaller.
  • Metadata is not carried over, so the JPG has no camera or location details.

JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for photographs and anything you are about to upload or email. Choose WebP to PNG for logos, icons, stickers and screenshots, where a transparent background or sharp edges matter. A photo saved as PNG can be several times the size of the JPG without looking any better.

Questions

Why do websites use WebP?

It typically produces smaller files than JPG at similar quality, so pages load faster.

Will the JPG be larger than the WebP?

Usually, yes. That is the cost of moving to an older, less efficient format.
