AVIF to JPG
AVIF is one of the newest image formats and support outside browsers is still patchy. A JPG copy opens in everything.

How to use it
- Choose your .avif files.
- Adjust the quality if you want to.
- Download the converted JPGs.
Good to know
Decoding relies on your browser's built-in AVIF support, which is present in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If a file will not open, update your browser first.
Where AVIF files come from
AVIF arrived in 2019 and is based on the AV1 video codec. Many large websites now serve it because the files are tiny, so a picture you save from the web may turn out to be .avif. Browsers handle it well, but older desktop software, office suites and upload forms often do not.
What changes in the conversion
- Transparent areas become white, since JPG has no transparency.
- Animated AVIF files generally give you a single frame.
- Bright HDR highlights are converted to standard range and can look flatter.
- If a file will not open, update your browser, because decoding relies on it.
Where JPG is still the better choice
- Upload forms that accept only JPG or PNG.
- Older photo viewers and office software.
- Printing services and photo kiosks.
- Attachments that people may open on old devices.
Questions
Why was this AVIF file so small?
AVIF compresses very efficiently, often well below what JPG can reach at the same visual quality.
Are HDR images supported?
They are converted to standard dynamic range, so bright highlights may look flatter.
