Good to know
Since AVIF files are usually tiny, the PNG can be many times larger. That reflects the format and is not a fault in the conversion.
Why choose PNG for an AVIF
PNG is the safest working copy when an AVIF has a transparent background or is going into editing software. Unlike JPG, it keeps the transparency, and it will not lose any more quality however many times you save it.
Why the file grows so much
AVIF throws away detail you are unlikely to notice, and it is extremely good at it. PNG has to store every resulting pixel exactly. A 100 KB AVIF photo can become several megabytes as a PNG. That is normal. For photos you only want to send to someone, AVIF to JPG gives a far smaller file.
