MP4 to MP3
Keep just the sound from a video you recorded: a lecture, an interview or a rehearsal.

How to use it
- Pick a bitrate.
- Add your video files.
- Download the MP3s.
Good to know
The whole audio track is held in memory during the conversion, so videos of several hours work better on a computer than on a phone.
Support for less common audio codecs inside MP4 varies by browser. If one fails, try Chrome.
Choosing a bitrate
File size depends only on bitrate and duration, so you can work it out in advance.
| Bitrate | Per minute | One hour | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | 0.96 MB | 58 MB | Lectures, interviews, speech |
| 192 kbps | 1.44 MB | 86 MB | General listening |
| 256 kbps | 1.92 MB | 115 MB | Music from a good source |
| 320 kbps | 2.4 MB | 144 MB | Maximum MP3 quality |
A higher bitrate cannot add quality
Audio in an MP4 is usually already compressed, typically as AAC. Converting to MP3 compresses it a second time, so there is a small loss whichever setting you choose. Going above the original bitrate makes the file larger without improving the sound. If you do not know the source, 192 kbps is a sensible choice.
If the conversion fails
- No audio found: the video may have no sound track at all. Check that it plays with sound in a media player.
- Some video files use audio formats such as AC-3 that browsers may not decode. Trying another browser can help.
- Very long videos need a lot of memory, so a computer is a better choice than a phone.
- .mp4, .m4v and .mov files are accepted. Links to online videos are not.
Use it on files you are allowed to use
Your own recordings, meeting captures and footage you have permission to reuse are all fine. The tool handles only files already on your device, and it cannot open DRM-protected videos.
Questions
Can I use it on YouTube links?
No. It works only with files that are already on your device.
Does the video size matter?
Only the audio is processed, but the whole file has to be read first.
