Webcam Test
Check your camera and framing before the meeting starts, rather than during it.

How to use it
- Press Start camera.
- Allow access when your browser asks.
- Check the picture, resolution and frame rate.
Good to know
The preview is mirrored, the same as most video apps show you yourself.
The video never leaves this page and nothing is saved.
About the resolution shown
This test requests your browser's default video stream and reports exactly what it receives. On many systems, that default is 640 × 480, even when the camera can do 1080p. So a low number here does not by itself mean your webcam is limited. Video apps ask for specific higher resolutions, and may get them.
Where the number is useful is in showing that the camera is delivering a stable picture. For the camera's maximum resolution, check the model's specifications.
What the frame rate tells you
- Around 30 fps is normal for a webcam and looks smooth on calls.
- Under 15 fps often means low light, as cameras lengthen exposure in dark rooms. Add light before suspecting a fault.
- If it stays low in good light, close other video apps and try a different USB port.
If the camera will not start
| Symptom | Try this |
|---|---|
| Access blocked | Allow the camera by the address bar, then check system privacy settings |
| Camera busy | Close Zoom, Teams, OBS or any other app using it |
| Black picture | Check the privacy shutter or a keyboard camera switch |
| No camera found | Reconnect it, or update the driver |
| Wrong camera | Use the Device list, which appears when you have more than one |
Looking better on calls
- Raise the camera to eye level, stacking a few books under a laptop if needed.
- Face a window or a lamp. Light coming from behind you turns your face into a silhouette.
- Leave a small gap above your head, and clear anything distracting from the background.
- The preview is mirrored, but other people on a call usually see you the right way round.
Questions
The camera is blocked. What now?
Click the icon by the address bar and allow the camera, then check your system privacy settings.
Why is the picture black?
Check for a physical privacy shutter or a keyboard camera switch, and close any other app using the camera.
