M4A to MP3
iPhone voice memos and many recordings are saved as M4A. MP3 plays on nearly any device, car stereo or website.

How to use it
- Choose a bitrate. 192 kbps is right for most things.
- Add your M4A files.
- Download the MP3s.
Good to know
128 kbps is plenty for speech and keeps files small. A higher bitrate cannot restore detail missing from the original.
What is inside an M4A
M4A is a container that usually holds AAC audio and sometimes lossless ALAC. iPhone Voice Memos and many recorders use it. AAC is efficient and sounds good, but some car stereos, older players and websites accept only MP3. That is the main reason to convert.
Picking a bitrate
| Content | Bitrate | One hour |
|---|---|---|
| Voice memo or lecture | 128 kbps | 58 MB |
| Podcast or mixed audio | 192 kbps | 86 MB |
| Music | 256 kbps | 115 MB |
| Lossless ALAC source | 320 kbps | 144 MB |
Is converting worth it?
Both AAC and MP3 are lossy, so converting adds a small generation loss. If your device already plays M4A, keep the original. Files bought with copy protection, or tracks downloaded in a streaming app, cannot be decoded here.
Questions
Why is it slow on long files?
Your own device does the encoding. A one-hour recording may take a few minutes on a phone.
Are protected tracks supported?
Files with copy protection cannot be decoded.
