How to use it

  1. Paste the earlier version on the left and the new one on the right.
  2. Press Compare.
  3. Red shows deleted words and green shows added ones.

Good to know

Comparison runs word by word. With extremely long texts it switches to line by line so that your browser stays responsive.

How differences are found

The tool compares the two versions word by word, treating each punctuation mark as its own item. Added words are green and removed words are red and struck through. The counters above the result show how many changes of each kind were found. When both texts are longer than roughly 2,500 words, it compares whole lines so that your browser stays responsive.

Good uses

  • Seeing what someone changed in a contract or a policy.
  • Checking an editor's changes against your draft.
  • Comparing two versions of a terms page or a press release.
  • Finding the one line that differs between two configuration files.

Getting a readable comparison

Capital letters count, so Word and word appear as a change. Text copied from a PDF often has different line breaks, which show up as noise, so run both versions through Remove Line Breaks first. Keep the older text on the left, otherwise additions and deletions will be swapped.

Questions

Can I compare code?

Yes, although the tool has no syntax awareness and treats it as plain text.

Is capitalisation significant?

Yes. “Word” and “word” are treated as different.
