How to use it

  1. Enter the start and end time for each shift.
  2. Enter unpaid break minutes.
  3. Add an hourly rate if you want to see your pay.

Good to know

A shift whose end time is earlier than its start is treated as running past midnight.

Pay is a simple rate multiplied by hours, before tax, and it does not include overtime.

A worked example

A shift from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours 30 minutes on the clock, less the break, which makes 8:00 or 8.00 decimal hours. A night shift from 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute break gives 7:30, or 7.50 decimal hours. At a rate of 20 per hour, that shift pays 150.00 before tax.

What the calculator does not handle

  • Overtime rates, night premiums and taxes. Pay is simply hours multiplied by the rate.
  • Clock changes. A night shift during a daylight saving switch will be an hour out.
  • A 24-hour shift. If start and end are the same time, the total is zero.
